Legislators Ask Governor To Reverse Planned Parenthood Funding Directive
Salt Lake City - House Representatives Rebecca Chavez-Houck, Patrice Arent, Carol Moss and Angela Romero are requesting that Governor Gary Herbert reverse his decision to order state agencies to discontinue disbursing federal funds to Planned Parenthood of Utah. The Governor attempted to defund the organization as a response to the release of highly controversial videos last year. A Texas grand jury investigation into those videos has cleared the organization of wrongdoing and instead indicted leaders of Center for Medical Progress, the group responsible for the videos.
Representative Chavez-Houck said, “The Governor reacted to a heavily edited, highly political video. He stated that even though none of the videos occurred in Utah, that the organization had ‘colored outside the lines’ and no longer deserved funding. Texas has now cleared the organization and charged the video creators. This is a clear message that the contracts and services Planned Parenthood provides are legal and supportive to men and women in our communities across the state. They provide necessary medical services like check ups and family planning. We ask Governor Herbert to support Utah women and direct the Utah Department of Health to continue their contracts with Planned Parenthood Association of Utah.”
