TODAY: Utah Celebrates Start by Believing Day as part of National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month

Salt Lake City
- House Democratic Assistant Whip Angela Romero will celebrate the third annual Start By Believing Day in Utah today by speaking at Take Back the Night March hosted by Students for Choice Westminster Chapter.

She said, “This day and every day we need to let our friends, family members, and others know that we believe them. 1 in 3 Utah women will be sexually assaulted. How we react to the news is vital in whether our loved ones define themselves as a victim or a survivor. We can do so much more to help support someone who has experienced this horrific violation of trust. We can offer them support, love, and direct them to the resources needed for healing. We can end so many victim’s silence by believing.”

Start By Believing is officially recognized in 4 states, with campaigns in an additional 42. Representative Romero’s resolution, which passed in 2015, designated the first Wednesday in April as Start by Believing Day. End Violence Against Women International adopted the day of observance and now coordinates Start By Believing Day events around the country and world.
