Utah House Members Stand With Standing Rock Protesters, Ahead of Evacuation Order

Salt Lake City - House Democratic Representatives Angela Romero and Mark Wheatley released the following statement in response to continued actions on the Dakota Access Pipeline:

Representative Wheatley said, “Under the disguise of a caretaker, the government once again intervenes in the lives of Native Americans. Commanding protesters to leave protest camps ‘for their own safety’ is laughable. The protesters remain because their safety, their very lives, are at stake.  Government at all levels can no longer avoid the continued dismissal of Native American rights to protect and defend their lands.”

Representative Romero added, “Trump’s continued executive actions put us all at risk. This administration has given rise to racism we haven’t seen in decades. What happens, what has happened, at Standing Rock serves as an inspiration to how a community can resist and be supported by so many others. I stand with Standing Rock. I stand with anyone who is afraid for their health, their safety, their lives. I stand against any order or rule that targets a single group of people, no matter what their identity. This is unacceptable.”
