Latino Legislators Mourn Passing of Community Leader John Florez

Salt Lake City - State Senator Luz Escamilla and Representatives Rebecca Chavez-Houck, Angela Romero, and Mark Wheatley released the following statement after learning of the passing of John Florez, former Utah Industrial Commissioner, presidential appointee, and weekly columnist of the Deseret News:

β€œHe was a bold but kind man. We sometimes didn't see eye to eye politically, but no one could ever question his commitment to our Latino community and all minorities. He was direct and wouldn't suffer fools gladly, even when the fools were us.

He  said what others did not have the courage to say.  In light of the upcoming change in the political landscape, his voice will be sorely missed. We need social justice advocates from across the political spectrum to step forward, as he always did.

He has always shown those of us who have been afforded political office or appointment that there is a responsibility to speak truth to power within our positions. He never forgot his humble beginnings or who he was. We wish our very heartfelt condolences to his wife, Diane, his family, and our community.”
