Clarification: Utah Representative Calls For Support of Religious Freedom at Standing Rock

Salt Lake City - Representative Angela Romero plans to call on the Utah Legislature to support protections for religious freedom and tribal sovereignty following the dramatic events that continue to unfold in Standing Rock, North Dakota.

She said, “Injustice anywhere is intolerable. Utah has a unique history working with local tribes and striving to respect the sovereignty and religious freedom of tribes and tribal lands. We are a state that fights to protect our right to worship. We fight to protect our lands, and understand their value and our responsible stewardship over them.”

A draft resolution that will be proposed in the 2017 legislative session includes passages that states “the State of Utah supports the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s legal, administrative, and legislative efforts” and calls on the federal government to follow through on its commitment to conduct a full review of the Dakota Access Pipeline project.  If passed, that resolution will be sent to the Trump administration. Representative Romero also plans on sending letters to President Obama, and Utah’s Congressional delegation.
